Thoughts from @bibendumwine on the #ddmsummit

WHAT DOES DIGITAL MEDIA MEAN TO YOUR COMPANY? Digital media is an area that Bibendum has invested a lot of time and energy into and we have found it to be a very welcome addition to the marketing mix. Our blog is well read and regarded and the great thing is that the tone and personality of our brand has been well suited to online communication methods. DOES DIGITAL MEDIA CHANGE THE RULES, OR IS IT JUST MORE OF THE SAME? No it doesn’t change the rules at all and it isn’t a silver bullet. It shouldn’t replace traditional marketing and comms but it has the capacity to add new dimensions to them. One thing that has changed significantly is the speed at which you can get your message out there. DO YOU THINK THAT SOCIAL MEDIA CAN BE USED TO PROMOTE DRINKS SENSIBLY? Quite simply, it has to...or else it won’t last very long. First of all the industry needs to develop guidelines and safeguards for alcohol communication via social media – difficult I know as things move so fast. Secondly any cross industry responsible drinking campaigns need to use social media to engage with their key audiences in an educational way. CAN DIGITAL MEDIA DIRECTLY LINK TO INCREASED SALES? There are undoubtedly ways, but it is often indirect, or more relevant to brand building. That said, I was very impressed with Majestic’s recent email and twitter daily parcel sales. TWITTER - FLASH IN THE PAN OR HERE TO STAY? The thinking behind Twitter is definitely here to stay but the actual tool itself will either evolve greatly or be overtaken by something else new and exciting.
